Welcome to Tampere University Library, dear new student! Library is available to you on University’s both campuses, Linna library on Main campus and Arvo library on Kauppi campus.

Linna and Arvo libraries

At the Library you need a library card. Come and have your student card activated as a library card at the Customer Service Desk of Linna or Arvo library. Bring also your photo ID (e.g. passport) with you. Electronic student card cannot be used as a library card, so then you’ll need a separate card.

Textbooks belong to your studies and you’ll find them in the Library. Most of textbooks are located in Linna, and in Arvo there are the textbooks for medicine, health sciences and biotechnology. The number of printed books is limited but you can borrow the so called short loan copies for overnight or weekend reading. Additionally, many of the textbooks are available as e-books that you can also download and read offline. See instructions on our E-book Guide.

You’ll find information on the textbooks and other information resources on Andor search service and its tools can be found in the Andor box on our home page. On Andor there are millions of references from international databases. The easiest way to find textbooks is to use Tamcat portal that is part of Andor. You can also find all our e-journals and databases on separate lists.

In the Library you can borrow and return loans handily using self-service machines, and you can pick up your reserved books from the shelf yourself. Renew your loans and make reservations online by logging in to your account on Tamcat. You can always ask for help and guidance at the Customer Service Desk, on chat (available on the bottom corner of our website, Andor and Tamcat), on FAQ service or by email: kirjasto@uta.fi.

Arvo library on Kauppi campus

Library is also your working environment: we have a variety of study spaces. When you read or work alone with your laptop, you can choose an adjustable desk, a comfortable chair or a sofa in different parts or the Library. University’s wireless networks are available also in the Library.

Computers are available in the Library’s Learning Centers and classrooms. Computers have various software and you can print using your print quota. You can also copy and scan using the multifunction printers.

The Library organizes the Basics of Information Literacy including in your studies and other courses in the classrooms but you can use them with your key card when they are free. You can see the teaching hours on the display beside the door. Please note the colour signs in the classrooms and other spaces. They tell you if the space is meant for quiet working or discussions.

You will need group work spaces often. The Library has both bookable and freely available group work rooms. You can do the booking via your Office365 calendar. The freely available group work rooms can fit one or more groups at the same time. Also, Linna’s multipurpose working spaces Pohjantähti and Idea are suitable for group work as long as you take those studying near you into consideration. Events are also organized in Idea occasionally.

The most quiet working areas are the Silent Reading Rooms that are available for you 24/7 with your key card (in Arvo also Learning Center and two group work rooms are 24/7 premises). In Linna’s Reading Room you can use your own laptop or tablet, and for readers there is a separate area where devices are not allowed.

Studying in Arvo library

In the Library there are a wide range of spaces and a wide range of students. Studying goes well if we only take each other into consideration and together cherish working in peace.

Use the Library to support your studies:

Changes at the Library: January 1st 2019 the libraries of the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology and Tampere University of Applied Sciences will merge into the library of the new Tampere University and it will serve the students of both the University and TAMK.

  • Changes in the future library services are being prepared already during the autumn. The joint information systems are still being developed during the transition period, so we hope for patience from our customers. However, the Library strives to serve in the best possible way.
  • We recommend that you follow the communication of the Library on the website and in your email.

On Blog: Customers Influence the Development of Tampere3 Library

Tampere3 logoThe first customer survey for Tampere3 libraries was organized in March. We received a total of 1080 responses (UTA 813, TAMK 181, TUT 86). The largest group of responders by far were the students, who generally are the most active in giving feedback. To all respondents warm thanks for the important feedback!

The aim of the survey was to collect information about the functionality of libraries’ current services. We also wanted to give the customers an opportunity to share ideas about the new service package of the coming joint Tampere3 library. The survey results and the ideas for development received through the open answers will be used in the development projects of the new library.

We have carefully read though the feedback and picked the most important development ideas for the projects’ agenda. The most feedback was received about libraries’ premises, e-resources and online services.

Continual development of premises

Libraries received thanks about their 24/7 spaces and chat service. The face-to-face customer service was also considered very important.

Libraries’ premises received acknowledgement, but also more spaces and longer opening hours were hoped for in the feedback. After the summer holidays the Tampere3 library’s customer service project will survey the development areas and see which of them can be realized in the new library. The functionality of the opening hours will also be considered.

Usability of e-resources is important

The respondents were relatively satisfied with the information resources offered by the library, but they considered it a shortcoming that not all Tampere3 libraries’ material can be used by everyone. More guidance on the use of e-resources was also requested.

During the autumn we’ll negotiate the new e-resource collection for the new library. Our goal is to get access to the resources for as large part of our community as possible. Improving the usability of e-resources is also a priority as we are developing the services.

New information system is being planned

Functionality of the library’s online services received the most critical feedback. Especially the different user interfaces and logging in to the systems confuse the university respondents.

These problems will not be completely resolved when the new library starts its operations at the beginning of next year. We are currently acquiring a new information system which is planned to be available in the end of 2019. Unfortunately, until then we have to continue to operate with two separate search services. However, we aim to guide and advise on their use throughout the transitional period.

Since many things will be changing in the new library, we will actively inform our customers about the changes. That’s why we warmly recommend that you follow your library’s information channels like news on the website and messages in your email. Further questions and suggestions are always welcome!

NPS score of the Tampere3 libraries' User Survey

We received a lot of praise for the libraries’ functional services. The excellent NPS score (61) also shows this.

On Blog: Tampere3 Library is Created in Cooperation

Tampere3 logoTampere3 higher education institution will start its operations at the beginning of next year. At the same time, the library serving the institution will also begin its work. This future library combines the present library services of the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The new library will be positioned in the university’s organization, but it will offer library services to the whole institution.

The staff of the three libraries has already been planning the services of the future library for months. In the library projects, we are developing the customer service processes, the services for publishing and open science as well as the training offered on information seeking. At the same time, we are preparing the acquisition of a new library system. When realized, it will renew the library’s digital services to better suit the changing customer needs of today and even tomorrow.

The library is an important part of the studying and research infrastructure. Also in the future Tampere3 library aims to offer broad, high-quality and competitive information resources meeting the needs of students, researchers, university staff and other customers.

Development continues even after January

Even though the work is in progress, our services will not be ready yet when the new library starts operating.  We’ll have to manage for a while with transitional solutions for many services, especially for operations connected with information systems. In the beginning, there will still be many things to finish and develop further and not all customer expectations will be met immediately. That is why we hope that our customers will have patience to follow with us through this busy and even laborious phase.

A lot will remain unchanged in our good services. The present library offices will serve the customers also in the future. The library isn’t giving up any other of its services either, even though we are considering new ways to produce them. This doesn’t mean that the services of the present libraries will be unified and offered similarly to all customers, but when planning the service supply we will take different customer profiles into consideration.

Influence the future services

Library services are developed in a customer-oriented way, and collecting feedback has been established as the most important tool for acquiring customer information. Customer feedback is systematically used in developing the services and in planning new ones.

The libraries are currently running the User Survey of Tampere3 libraries. In the survey, we hope to get a lot of feedback and development ideas from the customers. Now you can give your valuable contribution to the library’s development while ensuring that also in the future the library offers those services you need.

On Blog: Recommended by Doctoral Researcher

During 2017 Tampere University Library presented a whole new online course directed to doctoral researchers. Managing Research Information course (2 ECTS) consists of topics such as scientific information retrieval, research data management and Open Access publishing. Also different aspects of visibility and impact, such as bibliometrics and altmetrics are discussed on the course.

The course tries to capture a wide range of issues crucial to researchers’ work. It’s important to acknowledge these issues even though they might not seem so relevant at the beginning of the research career. For example, research funders have started to emphasize the importance of opening the research data. If you aim to open your data, it’s essential to take that into consideration already in the planning phase of data collection.

Please, introduce yourself.

Moi! I am Tomomi Hisasue, and I originally come from Japan. I am a first-year PhD student in nursing science, in the Faculty of Social Sciences. I completed my first master’s degree in public health in the University of Tampere in 2011. Then I completed my second master’s in health economics and management (Norway, the Netherlands, and Austria) in 2017. Finally, I returned to study in Tampere!

My research topic is “Impacts of family violence against women on well-being and costs related to the utilisation of health and social services in Finland”. My research will cover a combination of different disciplines, including not only nursing science, but also health economics and health policy.

What are your impressions on the Managing Research Information course in general? 

The course was well-organised in terms of several types of activities; I liked the balance between readings and viewings.  During the course, we received a specific task every week. It usually started by needing to understand some concepts through watching YouTube videos, then we had discussion with other students, readings, or wrote a short essay. The workload was suitable and didn’t overwhelm me.

Did the course help you tackle some practical or specific problem? 

My answer is a definite “yes”. During the course, I learnt how to write data management plans with good structures and make sure all needed information is included. I am sure my research grant proposal has developed.

In addition, before taking this course I thought that I would conduct my research first and then I choose a relevant journal. But I realised that increasingly a publication plan is required at the beginning of research. After the course I can now make a more appropriate study plan.

Are there some contents that should be included on the course? Or some topics of which you would you like to get a deeper insight?

I think it depends on your previous experience. If you have already published an article, you know something about how to proceed in the process. I found out that Open Access is a huge topic and quite challenging to understand. I would like to continue learning more and get a deeper insight of it.

Have you discussed about the things you learned on the course with your colleagues? 

One of my colleagues took the course during the same period, and we brought some topics up in our regular weekly coffee-break meeting.  It stimulated and promoted our discussion about our data management issues (e.g. Creative Commons licenses, Open Access, etc. in our field).

The course also helped me to discuss possible target journals with my supervisor. Nowadays, the JUFO level seems to impact on some funding decisions in Finland. It is not the only important factor when deciding a target journal, but we likely need to understand, or convince co-authors or funders, why we will choose a particular journal to publish our research.

Would you recommend Managing Research Information course? To whom? 

Yes! My colleague recommended me to take this course at an early stage of my PhD studies. I was very glad to take her advice. I recommend this course for first-year PhD students because the course helps you to understand how to publish a research paper in a journal, from many perspectives, and that is not a simple task.  However, even if you are a second- or a third-year student, it is probably a very useful course to take in order to update your skills and to better understand publication procedures.

Did you know that in Linna library there is a wide variety of study spaces available to you? When you come to the Library, choose a suitable seat and concentrate on studying. You can read or use your laptop or tablet in the University’s wireless networks.

On all three floors of Linna library you can find different kinds of study spaces.

on the same floor in the three clasrooms when they are not occupied by teaching. The classrooms Alma and Akseli are intended for silent working, but in Elina you can also work together if necessary, using low voice. Color signs guide the use of different spaces.

The most silent working space in Linna is Silent Reading Room on the 2nd floor. It is available for the University students 24/7. You can use laptop or tablet in the larger area of the Reading Room, but the glass-walled area is reserved only for readers. When the Library is open you enter the Reading Room via a separate staircase from the main lobby of Linna building. At other times use the side door situated opposite the Finnish Student Health Service building using your key card.

Starting group work together

Studying is often lonely, but luckily there is group work.

You can do group work in Linna in five group work rooms that you book in your Office365 calendar (see booking instructions) or in the three rooms that are open for flexible use. Of these three in Rokka and Koskela there is room even for two groups at the same time.

On blog: Our response to feedback from the customer survey

To this spring’s customer survey, we received 1305 responses and feedback from all of our user groups. Our degree students were the most active group in voicing their opinions (76%). Thank you for the feedback!

One of the most important functions of the library is supporting studying and research. Both require well-functioning working spaces and the support of library’s information services at the right time. Based on the feedback the customers also think these things are important. The feedback gives us guidance on how to continue to develop both library as a working space and library’s virtual services.

Classrooms are also your working space

Library’s new versatile premises received many thanks in the survey. However the premises are in high demand and especially more room for group work was requested. It seems not all of our space options are well known, so we aim to inform the students about them more effectively.

Some have felt that checking the availability of group work rooms in the Office 365 calendar is difficult. You can view current week’s reservations also on the Group work rooms web page (Facilities and equipment -> Group work rooms) and on the Booking instructions page by clicking the names of the group work rooms.

In Linna library the classroom Alma is also available outside of teaching hours for students to use with their key card

During last semester, we got one new bookable group work room in Linna (Vanhala, 3016). By opening the classrooms to students with key card, we created common space for both independent study at the computer and group work. Because there were questions regarding the use of the classrooms, we defined the way to use the rooms with colour signs.

In Linna the classrooms Akseli and Alma are red, meaning spaces for quiet work. The third classroom Elina and Arvo library’s Mauri are yellow spaces where even group work is possible as long as you consider the other users also. Additionally the former bookshop space beside the lobby by the Kalevantie entrance in Linna is a space where several groups can work at the same time.

Comfortable chairs are comfortable to sit on and study. On the other hand, students are knowledgeable about good ergonomics. In addition to the existing standing work places, we recently received new adjustable standing desks. Chairs will be acquired if possible. Check all the corners of the library, there you can find many kinds of seating.

Andor assists in finding information

Andor logoThe new and long awaited information search system Andor has been in service since autumn. It has been continually developed within the possibilities of technology listening to customers’ feedback. In the survey feedback, Andor received both thanks and criticism.

It takes time to learn to use a new search tool. We will strengthen Andor’s marketing and continue user-training workshops. Andor guide is there to help the user and we are also here to help through chat, online, email andor@uta.fi, Andor and Tamcat’s feedback form or in the Library.

Guidance and training flexibly online

Varaa ohjausaika -ikoniWe want to develop flexible services also online. The real time connection to library experts through chat service received many thanks in the survey. From now on we offer the personal Book a Librarian service also online to those customers for whom it is difficult to come to the library. When you are booking your time, choose remote guidance as the meeting place on the form.

Online sections have already been used on information seeking courses integrated into degree programmes. Online teaching will be used also in the future to facilitate flexible studies. The new Managing Research Information online course aimed at researchers was offered for the first time this spring and it turned out to be a good way for researchers’ training. We will continue with online training also in the future.

The survey responses gave us many ideas that we will develop and implement gradually. Follow our newsfeed to keep up to date.

Blogissa: Kun viitteiden hallinta ei toimi kuin Strömsössä

Parhaimmillaan viitteidenhallintaohjelmat säästävät työtä ja aikaa. Niistä on apua viitteiden järjestämisessä ja tekstiviitteiden ja lähdeluettelon tekemisessä.

Homma ei aina kuitenkaan etene kuin Strömsössä, kun ohjelma esittää oikukkaamman puolensa. Kirjoittamiseen tarvittava apuohjelma ei lataudu koneelle tai katoaa, viitteidenhallintaohjelman tuottama lähdeluettelo ei vastaa lehden vaatimuksia,  pilkut eivät ole kohdillaan tekstiviitteissä tai lähdeluettelossa.

Täällä kirjastossa autamme asiakkaita parhaamme mukaan, mutta välillä on tarvetta turvautua myös muiden apuun. Korvaamattomia apuja ovat yliopiston oma IT Helpdesk ja RefWorksin oma tuki. Kaveriapua ei sovi myöskään unohtaa.

Millaista apua viitteidenhallintaohjelmiin kysytään eniten?

“Ihmiset osaavat kyllä laittaa viitteet paikoilleen ja hallita niitä. Mutta on erinäisiä vikatilanteita, joita ohjelman käytön kanssa tulee. RefWorksissa vikatilanteet ovat pääasiassa liittyneet yliopiston väitöskirjapohjaan. Sitten on ollut yhteensopivuusongelmia [Wordin] kanssa. Joskus tietty versio ei ole toiminut, mutta se on korvattu ennen pitkää uudella.”

”Mendeleyn kanssa kysytään apua silloin, kun asiakkaat haluavat siirtää viitteensä sinne RefWorksista. Mendeleyn päivitystä kysellään aina silloin tällöin, mutta se nyt on helppo homma.”

”Ihmisiä käy kotiläppäreiden kanssa, ja myös niissä on korjattu RefWorksia.”

Miten voitte auttaa asiakkaita?

“Ongelmat viitteidenhallintaohjelmissa on saatu yleensä ratkaistua. Väitöskirjapohjan kanssa on joutunut sanomaan, että en pysty auttamaan. En tiedä onko vika softassa vai väitöskirjapohjassa. Siinä saa mennä aika syvälle, kun tutkii, mistä se johtuu.”

”Kaikki yliopiston kautta hankittavat ohjelmat kuuluvat tuen piiriin, myös kotikoneelle hankitut. Eli Officet ja kaikki, mitä opiskelijat voivat tunnuksellaan ladata. Myös puhelimen kanssa autetaan. Jos haluaa esimerkiksi sähköpostin puhelimeensa niin siinä autetaan, jos ei itse sitä pysty tekemään.”

Mitä haluaisitte erityisesti sanoa asiakkaille?

“Ei kannata lannistua. Kannattaa hakea muita vaihtoehtoja, jos yksi ei toimi. Kannattaa tulla rohkeasti kysymään apua. Ei kannata hakata päätä seinään viikkotolkulla. Ongelman ratkaisu voi olla hyvinkin helppo ja yksinkertainen.”

ProQuestin RefWorks Support

How did you end up in RefWorks support?

“I started working at ProQuest in July 2012 supporting our Summon discovery solution and our 360 link products. That built a great foundation in support for technical products and in December 2015, I joined the RefWorks support team. I primarily support customers in Europe but also provide back up support to other customers around the world.”

How many contacts with RefWorks support are there at annual level?

“The number varies day to day and can be seasonal, but to give you an idea of volume, in 2016, we responded to about 20,000 queries. All our queries receive an initial response within 24 hours.”

What are the most common reasons for contacting RefWorks Support?

“The main categories of queries relate to user name/password reminders, which we are automating through upcoming advancements in the product.  Additionally, we help customers set up various types of authentication methods, like shibboleth/ezproxy authentication. And we get “how to” questions: For example, users want to know how to create bibliographies using Write “N” Cite and how to manage folders and references.”

How are these customers’ questions/problems used for product development?

“Many of our product improvements come from our users. We capture, track and discuss all customer product enhancement suggestions with our product management team.  This allows us to connect feedback from customers to our development efforts.”

How do you make migration from old to new RefWorks as smooth as possible?

“Hundreds of customers have already migrated to New RefWorks. As part of the migration process, we have created special materials including user guides, LibGuides and webinars to help our customers move to our improved platform.  After migration, our team always follows up with our customers to make sure the transition went well and to help in any way we can.”

What is your message for RefWorks users if problems come up?

“We want our users to know that we’re here for them no matter what the product challenge is. Whether it’s migration or a routine question, we are always here to help. Our team can be reached at support.refworks@proquest.com. Count on us to help researchers do the most with New RefWorks.”

Feel at home in the Library, new student

Congratulations for the place to study and welcome to Tampere University Library! We serve you on the Main campus in Linna library and on Kauppi campus in Arvo library. You’ll find our opening hours on the Library website.

Library cards

Student card is your library card when you first come to activate it at the Library’s Customer Service. Remember to take a photo identification with you! If you need books already before you have got the student card, come to fetch a temporary library card.


First you’ll need textbooks. Most of them can be found in Linna library. Textbooks of medicine, health sciences and biomedical technology are in Arvo library. Textbooks are really popular but you can also borrow them as short loans for a day or a weekend. Many books can be read as e-books, even without Internet connection.

Library is your place for studying. Choose one of the various seats that can be found all around the Library for reading or using a laptop. For group work you can book group work rooms. In multipurpose working spaces you may also speak and Silent Reading Rooms are our quietest working environments. All over the Library we all defend working in peace and take other students into consideration.

In the Library you can use computers with software, print, copy and scan or use your own laptop or table in wireless network.

Customer Service in Linna

Ask away. Even though you can borrow and return using the self-service machines and pick up your reserved books by yourself we are there at the Customer Service desk to answer your questions. Virtually you can ask using:

Library’s response to the feedback from customer survey

Customer survey logoTampere University Library’s users responded to our call: we received 1324 answers to this year’s customer survey. Thank you for your interest in influencing the development of your library! We also raffled off several prizes among the respondents and they have been sent to the winners.

We received responses from all of our user groups, students, doctoral students, researchers, teachers and other staff of the University, staff of Tampere University Hospital and customers outside of the university community. Again students were the most active respondents (64%).

This year the customer survey used the international LibQual tool that’s been tailored for research libraries. It evaluated the three core areas of library services, affect of customers services, information resources and their management and library as a working environment.

We also received lots of open feedback. We have carefully read it through and respond here to the key issues that rose out of it.

Information retrieval systems will be renewed

In the feedback many respondents wished that the information retrieval systems would be renewed. Tamcat and Nelli have served us faithfully but their usability is no longer up to modern standards.

We have searched for and investigated a new solution for a functional retrieval system. Currently it looks like the customers will get a new search interface in the fall. Follow the library news so you can use the new interface as soon as possible and share your experience with us.

We are also continually developing the library website as customers’ information source. The whole University website will be renewed during the Tampere3 process and that’s also when the new library’s own website will be planned.

More room from computer classrooms

Last year in Linna more working spaces e.g. open group work rooms were renovated for the customers, and in Arvo comfortable reading and workspaces were furnished. In the customer survey’s feedback thanks is given for the new spaces but also more space is requested for different purposes. Working spaces are really important for our customers.

The students can also use Linna’s new classroom Alma on the third floor when it’s not occupied for teaching.

We respond to this need by opening all the library’s computer classrooms for students with student card when not used for teaching. Already open are Linna’s Alma and Akseli classrooms and Arvo’s classroom Mauri. At the end of the summer also Elina, the third computer classroom in Linna, will also become open.

Laptop users hoped for more quiet working space. More will be available once we make changes in Linna’s second floor Silent reading room. Then laptops will be allowed in the large room and the smaller room will become the quiet reading space.

Find spaces and collections

Based on the feedback not everyone is able to find the library materials and spaces easily, especially not in Linna.

A new touch screen giving information about services and spaces will be placed on the wall of Linna’s customer service in the first floor. On the screen you can also use the library website, search for materials or book a group work room using the new booking system. On the premises we’ll make the Linna floor map that guides to shelves and different spaces clearer.

Small screens where you can check when the space is available, will be placed by the doors of the bookable group work rooms and computer classrooms in Linna and Arvo.

Silence and talking in the library

Based on the feedback some experienced occasional noisiness and crowdedness in Linna. As the library services on Main campus were centralised in Linna, naturally the number of users grew and the new working spaces are popular.

Library is still sometimes thought of only as a place for quiet reading. But these days the library users also need spaces for discussion and working in groups.

in Linna’s popular multipurpose space Pohjantähti on the first floor you can work alone or together with other students. In Pohjantähti you may also speak.

When Linna was renewed we defined the first floor and its new Pohjantähti multipurpose working space as an area where talking is permitted (see Linna floor guide on Offices-page). Also an area for discussion was created on the ground floor of Arvo. Linna’s second floor is an area for books and reading, whereas on the third floor customers can work not just alone on the learning center’s and computer classrooms’ computers but also in group work rooms. The quietest space can be found in the Silent reading room.

Services for different users

New services in the Library include borrowable Thesis lockers where students working on their thesis can keep their materials. To make sure the lockers are available to as many as possible, their loan period is now shorter but they can be reserved and renewed at the customer services.

Computers that can be used without university’s basic user account are also needed in the library. In Linna there are two such computers, in Arvo four. We are also investigating the possibility of adding more computers in Linna for customers from outside of the university community.
