The ERC funded research project “Gender, party politics and democracy in Europe: A study of European Parliament’s party groups” (EUGenDem) commenced 1 August 2018.

The five-year (2018-2023) research project is funded by European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant (PI Professor Johanna Kantola). It is located in Gender Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Tampere University, Finland. Dr Anna Elomäki and Dr Petra Ahrens are Senior Researchers, Dr Barbara Gaweda and Dr Cherry Miller Postdoctoral Researchers and Valentine Berthet PhD student in the project.

EUGenDem provides a systematic analysis of the gendered policies and practices of European party politics. The research comprises a comparative study of the European Parliament’s (EP) party groups and generates empirical findings about the significance of gender in the current party political transformations in Europe.

The project is closely linked to the international research network Gender Equality Policy in Practice (GEPP) directed by Professors Amy Mazur, Joni Lovenduski and Isabella Engeli. The project has over 70 researchers from different parts of the world and it looks at the challenges related to the implementation of gender equality policies. We take part in the issue strand on implementing gender equality in labour policy in GEPP (strand directed by Amy Mazur and Roberta Guerrina).
